So Many Books

During my time at F+W Media I designed hundreds of books.

A book cover is a sales tool first and a piece of art second. Beyond choosing images and fonts, cover design is about reading a market and making design do the heavy lifting before a single word of the book is read. It is strategic creative work.

Interior design is almost the opposite. It is largely invisible when it succeeds. Typesetting a book means making dozens of micro-decisions about type size, leading, margins, and hierarchy that collectively determine how comfortable, engaging and easy it is to read. These are examples of some of my favorites.
